Turner's title for the series, the Liber Studiorum, is a direct reference to the Liber Veritatis of Claude Lorraine. In the present, complete, copy, the states (as per Finberg) are as follows: 7 plates in first state, 22 plates in second state, 25 plates in third state, 12 plates in fourth state, 5 plates in fifth state and no plates in sixth. For the present discussion (Part 2 of the three instalments) I wish to move the focus onto Joseph Mallord William Turner (–) and the reproduction of his oil paintings, sketches and watercolours published in the Liber Studiorum [Book of Studies]. Mindful that there is already a wealth of easily accessible information about Turner’s Liber Studiorum (see, for example, .

Joseph Mallord William Turner was born on 23 April and baptised on 14 May. He was born in Maiden Lane, Covent Garden, in London, England. His father, William Turner ( – 21 September ), was a barber and wig maker. His mother, Mary Marshall, came from a family of butchers. A younger sister, Mary Ann, was born in September but died in August Nor can we acquit Turner of unfairness in issuing the “Liber Studiorum” in competition with the French painter’s “Liber Veritatis,” a book well-known to the public and to him, as the third edition of its plates, engraved by Earlom, was just issued, when the “Liber Studiorum” was begun. He must have known what the public did not.

Turner used this composition for plate fifteen of his Liber Studiorum, published 10 June in part 3 (see Forrester, , illustrated); the plate is entitled 'LAKE OF THUN, SWISS' 19 and categorized as 'M' for view is generally taken as that looking west along the lake, with the Niesen on the left and the Stockhorn on the right, though Wilton . The Liber Studiorum, a series of Turner’s landscape and seascape compositions published as prints in etching and mezzotint, has been described as perhaps containing ‘the pith of all that is best in his life and work’,1 ‘central to Turner’s career as the most personal and carefully conceived series of prints in his entire oeuvre’,2 or at least the ‘most complete document of Turner.
